Some good laughs, and not only...
Announced like some kind of realistic comedy about Hong-Kong youth, Truth or Dare finally begins like most of HK typical comedies. Which means that the humor is quite silly, most of the actors are overacting. This part is not very surprising or original, but quite well done, the actors are young but most of them are quite convincing when trying to do some funny faces, the directing is efficient and with a good rythm. It deals with some topics rarely chosen in this kind of movie, like sexuality, but without really going in depth. In a few words, it's not really new, but it's well done.
Then the movie begins to get a bit more serious, and we understand that all those silly attitudes are maybe used to hide some problems that those youngsters don't really want to face. That's the real interest of the movie, and it makes it more than "just" a silly comedy. Of course, it still remains a comedy, with the kind of happy ending that we are used to see in recent movies in Hong-Kong, and the stories of the characters are a bit too similar (I look happy but I have a problem). Truth or Dare is not a masterpiece, that's obvious. But it's still a nice comedy with an interesting serious touch.
Talking about the performances, there is of course a lot of overacting, some may find it quite annoying from time to time, but it's hard to resist to all those silly faces. The 1st prize will easily go to Candy Lo, already familiar with this kind of "physical" comedy. It was obvious from Time and Tide that she has some skills in comedy. It's confirmed here, she is easily the funniest character in the group. Then you have Karena Lam trying a comedy for the first time, and obviously, she is better for dramas for the moment. At the opposite of Candy, she is not very funny, but when it comes to the serious part of her character, she provides a nice performance, and her very lively attitude is also nice to see. Then the guys are really trying hard to look as stupid as possible, and they often succeed. When it comes to the dramatic part of the character, it's less convincing. Conclusion: just as last year, girls rock.
To summarize, Truth or Dare is a big like a good yogurt. It's sweet, with some real fruit pieces inside. You will laugh, and find some real life things inside of it. It's surely not the best dish ever, but it's still pleasant to eat. Worth a look, especially for fans of Candy and Karena./
